I get the worst sharp pains in my tooth but only when I lay down. Even taking pain killers won't make the toothache go away. The only thing that stops it or keeps the pain from starting is if I sit straight up. So I have been having to sit up on my couch recliner just so I can go to sleep without a toothache. Does anyone know why this is happening?
Strange toothache?
Yes I have seen it a few times. Pressure changes increases when lying down. Tooth may be going to abcess. See your dentist!! DMD here

Stupid Toothache!?
Ok ive had a tremendous toothache i have a dentist appointment but not until 3 days from now! Ive tried the warm water with salt, great at the first try made me able to go to sleep ( havents slept or ate in 2 days). When i tried it a second time it made my toothache much worse! Cold water resting on my tooth (wisdom tooth upper molar) seems to calm it down but only for like 5 seconds and then the pain comes back again. But then now im continuosly drinking cold water and peeing alot. Ive tried ambesol, made it worse, drinking ibuprofen (advil) 400mg. It still hurts, really bad point to crying. Help Please!!
Stupid Toothache!?
To me, when cold makes a tooth feel better, it is a sign of an Acute Pulpitis. What this means is that the nerve in the tooth is inflammed, and it doesn't like it so it is throbbing. I have had patients come into the office chewing on ice for relief. Only things you can do;
1)Remove the nerve from the tooth - or what is called a root canal.
2)remove the tooth
3)Take 600mgs of Ibuprofen 4 x a day, or 800mgs 3x a day.
and Tylenol 3 would be a better painkiller.
4)See a dentist immediately.
Antibiotics won't help at this point, because the nerve is not dead and there is not an infection that is causing the pain. The pain is caused by the troubled nerve. Stick it out for a few days, the pain will stop because the nerve dies, but then you will be open to starting an infection.
Good luck
Reply:I've been there. Most often, tooth pain is caused by infection. One thing that sometimes helped me is to take just a tiny bit of warm peroxide and let it sit on the tooth. It will foam. Do not swallow it and try your best not to vomit. Lie with your face on a heating pad. Also, and this is gonna sound really weird, but it might help, take two fingers and push them into your cheek right at the corner of your jaw. Maybe it's because it makes your mouth water, releasing some of the pressure, but I swear it helps. Good luck and believe me, I feel for you!

Minor toothache, can't find reason?
Every now and than I get an occasional toothache thats minor in pain. Ive had toothaches that don't go away %26amp; are severe because the teeth are bad, and had several teeth removed in the past. However these minor aches are nothing like a tooth being bad, as they're minor in pain. They always appear in different teeth (never the same one). However the dentist can not find any reason why I get them. They usually go away in 1-2 days on its on. Any ideas on what could cause them? I got one now %26amp; although they far from being intense in pain, I'm tired of having them, as I usually get them every couple months.
Minor toothache, can't find reason?
Could just be plain old sensative teeth. I have the problem, too. Try pressing a standard (non-coated) aspirin against the affected tooth, or swish a hydrogen peroxide solution around in your mouth, between the affected teeth (do NOT swallow). Instructions will be on the peroxide bottle, but it should the a 50/50 mix of peroxide and water. If nothing else, keep a little whisky or anbesol around the house for such an occaision, but I can tell you the whisky keeps and tastes better.
Reply:If the pain is deep and seems to involve more than one tooth at once, consider sinus issues. Try taking some (real) Sudafed.
If the pain seems to be a contact/surface pain, think sensitivity. Try a toothpaste for sensitive teeth and don't use whiteners, etc.
Reply:Different reasons: old filling, probably cracks deep inside. On top, could be related to sinuses, further back maybe clenching while you sleep. If you don't have a dentist that's good at problem solving, it's hard to figure out. I always say, take 3 tablets of Advil(if you're not allergic) every 6 hours to get rid of the pain and find a dentist that can think through. (ask around)
Reply:Minor or severe can it be, toothaches or shall we say strange pain on one of your teeth or the gum-line is usually the starting point of severe or worst dental problems. Aside from giving you sleepless nights of painful miseries and difficult chewing, it could actually threaten your health. You can ask a pharmacist what is the best over the counter treatment they have. If there is a lot of redness and swelling, he may have an infection which OTC treatments won't help. If the pain becomes intollerable, have him see a doctor (even if its the emergency room), they can give him an antibiotic to stop the infection and the pain will then stop as well. If he gets a bad infection, it could release toxins into his blood, so its best to have it treated rather than ignored if its very painful and shows inflamation.
Reply:Ambesol, yes it works. Oil of cloves is surprisingly effective. Did he lose a filling? There are temporary fillings in the store--maybe air touching his tooth is causing pain--that's why you'd use a temporary filling. Get him some of that Sensodyn toothpaste and take a finger and set a dab on his tooth where it hurts.
4 Advil, wait 3 hours
2 Extra Strength Tylenol, wait 3 hours
4 Advil, wait 3 hours...
Keep up this pattern until dentist is available.
Hope he feels better!

Reply:Benzodent does work, but there is the trouble of making it stay where you put it.
Try rinsing with warm (Not hot, not cold) water, and with slightly-warmed mouthwash. Also, oil of cloves has been used for a long time to stop tooth pain. If you can't get that but do have powdered cloves of some sort, try that.
Good luck to your boyfriend!
Reply:Orajel Max Strength works good especially when used with Ibuprofen. However you will have to apply it several times because it will wear off and when you are in pain it never seems to last very long.
Reply:Yes the gels do help, but if you can't get any of them, a cotton ball soaked in rum will soothe it. REALLY. Just go easy on the rum, or he could get a terrible headache to go along with it.
Reply:Your best bet would be 600mg ibuprofen (3xregular strength advil or 2xextra strength motrin) every 4 hours and taken with food (or milk if unable to eat). This will keep any swelling/redness/inflammation down. You can also add Tylenol 500-1000mg (1-2 extra strength tab) every 4-6 hours, but taken in between the advil or motrin (so he is taking something every 2-3 hours basically). Any OTC gel or cream will help, but very modestly and for short period of time. His saliva will wash it away after a few minutes or maybe an hour. Often the pain is inside the gum so the topical treatment is often of little help, but safe to use usually. He can keep a hot compress on his face or area of the mouth where it is hurting to help as well. If the pain continues to be very severe I would take him to a local clinic or ER to see a physician.

i can feel that u are really in pain by looking at those capital letters.. try this link.. http://sg.88db.com/sg/Views/landingpage....
Reply:Yes it can
Reply:Yes. The pain from a toothache can show up all over the place. In your ear, your temple, jaw, even the complete opposite side of your mouth,
Reply:Yes it can
Reply:yes it can , I had the same thing last night and had to go to sleep with it. hope you feel better soon.
Reply:Yes. Toothaches can affect your sinuses on the top and your jaw (especially) on the bottom. The temple is right above the jaw hinges on both sides.
When I had really bad toothaches (infection/root canals), it felt like the whole side of my head had a spike through it!
Try cold on the outside of your face. Heat will blow up a bad toothache; don't use it.
Hope you feel better :-)
Reply:definitely...take an aspirin or two. that usually helps my toothaches.
Reply:Anything below the Sun, including Sun can cause allurgy!
Toothpaste is afterall a chemical combination. All chemicals have property of creating side effects, some are experienced immediately while some are hidden.

Minor Toothache?
What could be causing a toothache that you barely notice, doesn't hurt when you eat sweets or anything cold or anything for that matter. That would actually make it so the same tooth but on opposite sides have the ache. Nothing makes it feel better or worse. I've had it for 3 days or so now. Haven't had my wisdom teeth taking out, but they haven't came in either. Only thing I can come up with is maybe it's a sinius problem, I have had a headache for the past couple days aswell and I know sinius aches can sometimes cause toothaches.
Minor Toothache?
Well if you know that sinus problems can cause this, and you had a recent one, then DING! You might have solved your own problem...
Other than that, you may have a cavity?
Why not try, treating the sinus infection completely, and once that's gone, see if the pain still exist, if it does, that you know you definitely have a tooth problem.
Reply:Seems like ur sinisitus.
Try a small clove under the uper and lower tooth .Works wonders in tooth aches. Numbs the pain.
Reply:Yes it could be sinuses or you could have a cavity that you can't see. Maybe u should go to a dentist just in case.
