What numbs a toothache best?

I have a really bad toothache and I have tried many things to stop it. It has been hurting for about four days now. Nothing will numb it and take the pain away for more than thirty minutes. The only time I don't feel it is when I am sleeping, (obviously). Please tell me what works best. I can't get to the dentist until about two too three days.

What numbs a toothache best?
You may be wasting your time with the 'remedies' that answerers have posted... and if you have an abscess, none of them will help...

You need antibiotics asap... the infection will only get worse, not better, and you don't want it to travel.

If you can't get in to see your dentist as an emergency, try your MD... at least you can get some relief (with antibiotics) until your dentist can see you.

Best of Luck~
Reply:Gee..."antibiotics"... Wish I'D said that. Report It

Reply:Anbusal.

Reply:advil for the pain

anbesol or orajel to rub on the tooth that hurts

it numbs the area

anbesol is the best
Reply:try some mouth wash or something.
Reply:Antibiotics. The infection in a tooth causes the swelling that squeezes the nerves, causing the ache. Treating the infection will cause the pain to be eliminated for long periods of time. However, a toothache signals a significant problem with that tooth that can't be solved without intervention by a dentist. Antibiotics will ELIMINATE the pain for a pretty long while, but then it will come back. Ultimately, you need the tooth to be professionally treated.
Reply:orajel... you just will have to keep applying it.
Reply:pure vanilla extract. it has like 30%-35 % alcohol. it works!
Reply:Try soaking cotton balls in black sauce or whiskey.Soak the tooth with it.This was used as a old remedy years ago but always worked to ease the pain.Good luck.
Reply:rub on some whiskey.
Reply:Just put a tea bag (do not let it get wet) on the area that is "affected." When your own saliva makes the bag "wet," then throw it out and immediately replace "it" with another dry one. Seriously "think" about how important you are. This "sucks" out the swelling which is definitely NOT good for your system. Then make an appointment to see your dentist right away. You know that the "teeth" are a part of our skeletal system. You don't want an "infection" to ride down through your system. If you will do this, then you will be alright. The Lord daily loadeth us with BENEFITS, even the God of our salvation. Selah. - Psalm 68:19. What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, WHO can be against us? - Romans 8:31. I wish you well. Peace, Love and God Bless.
Reply:Hi,

There are many methods you can use to help ease the pain of a toothache, some will work for you and some may not.

Here are a few home remedies you can try out if you like...

Hold a piece of ice over the painful tooth

Swig some whiskey around your mouth

Hold a piece of raw onion over it

These are just a few of the many home remedies you can use, the best thing, of course, is to see your dentist but as you have mentioned, it sometimes takes a while to do so.

You can try out some of these remedies in the meantime.
Reply:My mom used to take some real strong wiskey and rub it on our gums... Sometimes even letting us take good mouth full and sloshing it around holding it near the bad tooth.. Making sure we spit it out when we were through... Good luck.... Grant M in Pennsylvania
Reply:Clove Bud Oil- It helps!
Reply:I cannot understand how people don't go running to the dentist at the first sign of pain. When something hurts you you go to your medical doctor. So why does it take so long for someone to get in to see their dentist?

It sounds as thought you have an abscess. That is an infection in the bone around the roots of the tooth. This is a very painful condition and putting topical ointments on the gum will do little if anything at all. At the point that you are at, over the counter medications like Motrin will do little when taken in normal doses of 200mg.

You have to get to your dentist immediately for treatment. Hopefully the tooth can be saved by treating it with root canal therapy and then restoring it with a post and core and probably a crown. This treatment is not cheap but necessary to save the tooth which is important.

Antibiotics will ease the pain by fighting the infection but the pain and the infection will return after the antibiotics run out (10 days). So it is impreitive that you get to your dentist while you are on the antibiotic therapy.

Good luck.
