How do I make a Toothache stop hurting?

My mom has had a toothache for about a week. We don't have the money to see a dentist. And she's in a lot of pain. She tried oragel and whiskey but it's not even numbing it anymore. Is there something else that can numb it until we can find a way to get the money for the dentist. Please Help.

How do I make a Toothache stop hurting?
of course you know that pain is a symptom that something wrong is happening. Make sure that there are no free dental schools or clinics around, or maybe your dentist takes credit.

if no, clove oil on a q-tip rubbed on tooth and gum really does numb, but doesn't last long. This does help a lot!

Aspirin helps with the pain and swelling, if there is any. Or other pain killers or muscle relaxers.

Steroids help with swelling, but not something to just experiment with.
Reply:ice...
Reply:try taking some aspirin........without the alcohol cuz that can cause stomach bleeding when taken with aspirin!
Reply:call the dentist school-! its 10 dollars to get it fixed. ''at least here'' but the class will do it with the teacher there. theres about 2 or 3 ppl in the hands on classes. if u cant find it in yellow pages call the dentist who takes state aid n its 5$ once a week after they fix it.
Reply:Victoria dearest,

Usually painkillers like paracetamol could ease up a toothache in an instant. But if a high dose knee painkillers doesn't work for your Mam toothache, there could be only mean one thing..

Your Mam have quite a severe cavity - so sever it has deepen to her dental nerve..

Either she hack it off (the tooth) or see a dentist to plug the hole - and that also will stop the pain.. Or the cavity will spread to her other dental neural system - the only salvation for this is a dental operation with more cost.. And it will hurt more if that isn't treated the proper way..

Best of luck for your Mam..
Reply:I had a tooth ache off and on for about 2 months, and mostly cold and hot would trigger it. I couldn't afford to go to the dentist either, so I just took Ibuprofen, and you're right it doesn't help that much. I received an unexpected check in the mail for Christmas for $350. which was enough to get my tooth fixed, but it went away that day, and hasn't come back again. I do expect it to come back any day though. I'm hoping the tooth nerve just died by it's self, but am not sure that can happen. I noticed Oragel has a new product out that you brush on the tooth, but I haven't tried that either. You might go to a drug store and see about getting that. I think it costs $8.99 where I live. I know how she feels, and I wish her luck.
Reply:It is EXTREMELY important that she see a dentist. If the pain is that bad, there's probably infection, which can be life threatening. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do at home to relieve her pain.

If you truly do not have the money to go to the dentist, look for free clinics in the area, or nearby dental schools. Most city's will have a free clinic, however, they typically only do extractions. I cannot stress enough how important it is for her to see a doctor. Check your phone book, and if she's seen a dentist in the past, call them to see if she can get an antibiotic called in to a pharmacy. This is only a temporary fix, the antibiotics will help with any infection, but won't take care of the source of infection. Therefore, the pain will come back, sometimes worse.

If there's too long of a wait at the free clinic or dental school, take her to the ER. All they can do is give her an rx for antibiotics and pain medicine and tell her to see a dentist, but at least she'll be getting something to help in the meantime. However, if left untreated, she can end up with extreme swelling due to infection. I've seen patients that have had to go to an oral surgeon and have an incision made outside of the mouth because of such infections. They have to make the incision to drain the pus out and reduce swelling before any treatment can be done. Avoid this at all costs, the infection doesn't just affect your mouth, it affects your overall health.

Also, you can go online to CareCredit.com and apply. This is a credit card that can only be used for medical/dental reasons. Many offices accept it, and they offer interest free financing options. I'm sorry that there's nothing I can tell you to do at home, but whatever it takes, get her professional attention.

Reply:Tooth pain is horrible and there's not alot besides getting the problem taken care of that will make it stop hurting.. I'd suggest this, county hospitals regardless of whether you have insurance or not have to take you and treat you. Most of the time they will have a dentist on call or an oral surgeon and you can see them and make payments. If the hospital does not have a dentist on staff ask them where the closest place is that you could go and get treated and make payments they should know! Good luck and I hope your mom feels better!
