Had a toothache and was told I need root canal The pain is now gone Should I still have rc or get 2nd opinion?

I went the dentist for a toothache and was told I needed a root canal. Since then the pain has completely gone away. Should I still have the root canal or should I get a second opinion from another dentist?

Yes, you should absolutely get the root canal. The purpose of taking an antiotic is to remove infection and get you out of pain. Also, it's impossible to get a tooth numb that is infected therefore making it impossible to do a procedure while infection is present. There is still decay in the tooth and it's still eating away and getting bigger. If you do not have this tooth treated then you are going to find yourself in a world of pain again in the near future and the next time the tooth is going to hurt even worse. If I had a nickel for every patient that didn't come back and have treatment done because they felt 'all better' after taking an antibiotic, then I would be a very, very rich woman.... needless to say, they always came back crying later and in more pain.... some people just will not listen.

You need a root canal! The pain may be gone now, but believe me, it will come back sooner or later! Plus, if your dentist told you you need one, there is probably something wrong with your tooth.

In my case, a different dentist put too much filling in my tooth, so it was damaged.

If you don't get a root canal, later, the tooth might have to be removed.

hope that helpps
Reply:sorry but you need the rc. the cavity didn't go away.
Reply:Any infected tooth if not taken care of may lead to other infected teeth or other physical problems. Never know when it may flare up again and it will. Can you imagine it flaring up Thursday night of a upcoming three day weekend.
Reply:No save that money and wait until it hurts again.
Reply:Have a 2nd opinion--BUT it can be from the same dentist. Often, when the symptoms change, the diagnosis changes. Most likely, one of the three following things happened.

1. The tooth went ahead and died completely and does need a root canal before it abscesses and REALLY begins to hurt.

2. The source of pain was actually from either a GUM infection or a crack in the tooth--both of which need to be evaluated even if the symptoms have temporarily resolved.

3. You have a serious clenching/grinding habit that you may not be aware of. These habits can cause SERIOUS symptoms and pain, and can be very destructive. Though it may be a "simple" problem, it can cause significant pain, and it should be evaluated.
Reply:Once a tooth is infected there is no way to cure the infection other than to get the root canal or have the tooth taken out completely. The pain may be gone for now, but it will come back, unfortunately.

Your dentist should have showed you and explained to you exactly why your tooth needs a root canal. If s/he didn't you should go back or call and ask him/her to explain it better so you understand.

If you think your dentist misdiagnosed you then there is no harm in getting a second opinion. The down side of that is having to pay for a visit to another dentist.
