Persisting toothache after seeing the dentist?

2 weeks ago, I went to the dentist after having a severe toothache. Routine check up and an x-ray where I claimed the teeth was hurting but nothing was found.

The teeth hurting are the ones usually very sensitive to hot/cold, I told the dentist this, to which he then said it may just be the sensitiveness working up, I was recommended to use toothpaste specific for sensitive teeth and it should get better. It didn't.

I now figured that the pain was coming from the nerves, rather than the teeth or gums as such. The pain comes on completely randomly but I almost always have a big episode just before I sleep. The pain is only on the left side. I do have sensitive teeth and gums so I won't rule that out as a possibility, it just doesn't look like that pain from sensitive teeth can be so persistent.

Do I really just have sensitive teeth or does it look like something else (e.g., root canal)? What else can I take/do to help sensitive teeth besides flossing and the stupid toothpaste??

Persisting toothache after seeing the dentist?
The dentist would know if you needed a root canal by the x -rays. It could be that you grind your teeth at night. If you have a cold that could be a reason. Make sure you brush with a soft bristled tooth brush. Don't scrub your teeth, this can wear away enamel. Brush in little circles. You can also apply the sensitive teeth toothpaste with your finger to the specific teeth when needed. If you absolutley can't stand it, go see another dentist. Tell them the dentist you saw last and they can have the x-rays sent over to them before your appointment. It doesn't hurt to get a second opinion, I have worked with some terrible dentists I myself would never go to.
Reply:You need a second opinion. Toothache is the worst and you can't live like that. Also he has stuff that he can put on sensitive teeth which he didn't. He's a quack, go to someone else.
Reply:if you grind your teeth (in your sleep maybe) it can expose the nerves and then comes pain!!!!hope this helps if not then just ignore.
Reply:I think it sounds like you should have a root canal.
Reply:I would get a second opinion, and from someone a friend recommends because they have had good experience with the dentist. If you are having pain in your teeth it needs to be addressed and if the dentist you saw first is not willing to look into the root cause you need someone who will.
Reply:I use to work for a dentist as his assistant..While pain in your mouth or a toothache can be many diferent things with similar pain. It can be hard to pinpoint sometimes......

You can have an abcess just starting......You can have a pinhole cavity somewhere.....

You can have an infected sinus cavity,( which would show up on an exray)

You can have TMJ which feels like a toothache..Most patients with this grind their teeth at night a little and don't know it. Therefore applying pressure with clenched teeth.

I had the same problem a few times b/4....TMJ was one of my problems and I had to wear a mouth gard at night...

Another time I had had some bad pain for a couple weeks after I had a filling.......The problem was that the doctor needed to smoothe down the filling and make it flatter than what it was....He finally used that blue paper strip and saw how high the filling was.....One other time I had so much pain I wanted to throw myself against the wall literally It was BAD.. While he could find nothing wrong, he sent me to a specialist who extracted teeth only...........Here my dentis drilled the cavity out and drilled through the bone...........Tooth had to come out!!

Oh and by the way..You don't get root canals. They are performed on your tooth that has to have the nerves taken out!

That is a root canal...........
Reply:Visit another detist and have one more set of x-rays. Sounds like a cavity, or perhaps a wisdom tooth coming in and pushing into the root of another tooth.
