Really bad toothache...?

... i've had really bad toothache all last night! i'm booked in to the dentist later on today so i'll probably get a filling, but in the meantime is there anything i can do to ease the pain?

also, will the pain go away straight away after i have the filling?

Thanks for your answers!

Really bad toothache...?
Some times when you have a bad toothache that's caused by an infection in the nerve you will need a root canal. The dentist will first give you antibiotics and a painkiller to clear up the infection. Then two weeks later do the root canal.

In the meantime you can hold an ice pack up to your cheek, you can take over the counter pain medicine (Tylenol, Alive, etc). For immediate temporary relief you can take a piece of ice and rub it in the webbing between the pointer finger and thumb. It dose some thing with the nerves.

The pain in the tooth will go away after you have it filled, if that is what the dentist dose. If you get Novocain the spots where he/she injected it might be tender after it wears off, for a couple days. Nothing a little aspirin can't handle.

At least that has been my experience.
Reply:If you have a really bad toothache, it is quite possible that you dont just need a filling. Make sure that your dentist checks the tooth thoroughly so that you know the nerve is not infected. As for the pain, if you do just get a filling, it does not always take away the pain right away. It can still have some sensitivity. However, if the pain is a throbbing pain that is worse with heat than cold, you may need a root canal.

Also, just take some Tylenol, and if cold feels better, put a cold compress on the outside of your cheek.
Reply:Have a pain killer like Zinetac or Combiflam, to tentatively reduce the pain.

There is no medication if you are looking for, to get the teeth normal ;) You would have to sit, with mouth wide opened on the dentist's chair.

Request for some painkillers from the dentist which will help in stopping the inflamation and reducing pain. It might take couple of days.

2. a tootchache can have many different causes, most of which don't require a filling

3. the pain should vanish, or at least steadily decline until it vanishes, after treatment, whatever it happens to be
Reply:I think you may need a little more than just a filling since you have that much pain. You may need a root canal and that usually takes about 2 visits to the doctor. Someone above me suggested Tylenol, but for me Advil works best. Also, I don't know how old you are but a thing that I always do when I have bad tooth ache and can't get to the doctor right away, is putting some alcohol in my mouth (vodka) and rinse the mouth with it for about 2 or 3 min it's best if you keep it near your tooth a little bit it will help clean the area up if it's infected. But again I don't know how old you are and i know a little bit of alcohol to ease your pain won't harm you but i don't want to get you in trouble. Hope you feel better.
