Cat toothache?

I think my 13 year old cat has a toothache. I have an appointment with the vet at 3:30 pm. Is there anything I can do to make the cat more comfortable till then ?

Cat toothache?
unfortunately there is nothing that you can give over the counter. all OTC human pain meds are very dangerous for cats. just make sure to feed soft food until you see the vet. if your cat will tolerate it you can warm a damp towel in the microwave to make a warm compress (make sure it isnt too hot - nothing you wouldnt put on your own face) and see if he will let you hold it there. that may help relieve the pain just a little - at least give him a little more relief. good luck and hope he feels better soon
Reply:There is not too much you can do besides removing all crunchy food. If it is a toothache, the vet will probably give you a pain med. until they can do a surgery to remove the tooth.
Reply:Not really.

You must never give a kitty aspirin as a pain reliever, causes gastro bleeding.

Just give lots of attention, scratches under chin till vet appt.

Good lck.
Reply:For starters ask your vet (when they open today) if you need to stop giving kitty food and water so many hours before the visit (in case they want to pull the tooth out). An empty tummy is safer when you are put under (in case you vomit).

Also ask the vet if you can apply a TINY amount of baby oral-gel (oragel?) to the cat's gums/tooth that might be hurting kitty. Oragel is just a numbing agent, but always ask the vet first since it can also numb the throat and swallow reflex for a short span. I mean it's safe for infants who are teething, but you never know since it's a cat and not a human.

Holding kitty and petting her softly while holding a warm cloth against the side of her face might feel good to you if she will let you do it. Just make sure it's warm, and not hot enough to burn or annoy her. I personally think cold cloths make a toothache worse, but some people prefer a cold compress to a heated one for toothaches.

Mostly let kitty sleep if she can, just turn the lights low, keep sound down low, and don't let anyone disturb kitty if she's asleep. If she's a cuddle cat then cuddle her, otherwise leave her be because trying to hold her, or hold a compress to her cheek / mouth will only upset kitty and stress kitty out more (which can worsen pain).

Hope your kitty pulls through fine and that she's not in any serious pain. Ask your vet about how to baby her for pain and eating if it's her tooth. At 13 I wouldn't think they would put her under to remove a tooth (because at that old of an age her heart could give out).. Ask your vet how they do it if they do want to remove the tooth. That would really suck to be awake and have a tooth yanked out without a numbing shot %26gt;.%26lt;

You can also try to gently GENTLY massage the area that you think hurts her. If she likes it she'll let you continue, if it makes it hurt more then she will try to avoid the massaging (just rub with a firm but very gentle pressure).

Good luck sweety, and huggle your kitty for me.
