Toothache, swollen face, bruised eye?

I got a toothache yesterday on my front tooth and took some pain killers. However when I woke this morning my face was swollen from my lip up to the the bottom of my eye on the side of my face where the toothache is. I tried my dentist for an appointment but he was fully booked! Went to the doctor and got painkillers and anti-biotics. However the swelling seems to be continuing to increase. I now have bruising under my eye from the swelling. Does this sound like an abscess or something which requires root canal treatment. The tooth appears to be perfect in appearance (ie its not discoloured or anything) I assume I have to wait till the antibiotics remove the infection before i visit the dentist and get a tooth xray. I am just wondering what is likely to be causing this pain and swelling. I just hope I dont have to get my front tooth taken out!

Sounds like an abcess.... did you tell the dental receptionist it was an emergency? It takes a long time for the tooth itself to be discoloured from trauma or infection.

Try and get an emergency dental appointment ASAP - or go to the nearest dental hospital.
Reply:When you ring the dentist,if you say it's an emergency, they by law must see you the same day,and they will.Yours is classified as an emergency case
Reply:You need to go to the dentist immediately It sounds exactly like abscess!!

You might be able to get a root canal if it's not that severe. But my advice is get in to the dentist or even hospital
Reply:if you really cant get an appointment atthe dentist then go to the hospital, they will help you untill you get an appointment if its that bad!
Reply:its infection if its swelling...u may need a root canal but they wont pull it if its not bad...may i suggest tylenol pm...sleep it off for a day or two let the antibiotic work
Reply:When I was 15 I had my front tooth kicked-out.

I was distraught.

You would be amazed at the range of options that dentist have for a repair - crowns, bridges, implants etc.

So - don't expect the worst, because it is probably just an infection and the antib's will clear it up.

Don't forget to have a dentist look at it asap - although there is little he can do when there is swelling - because of access/pain/room to work etc.

Good luck.
Reply:abscess if you cant get to a dentist ,go to the doctors you need antibiotics
Reply:It sounds like a tooth abscess, which means that you either need a root canal or to have your tooth pulled.

If left long enough, the abscess can spread to your brain and you might either become brain damaged or die.

Reply:First of all, I think it is ridiculous that your practice would not see you when you have a swollen face and pain!!

I would advise that you take painkillers, such as Ibuprofen as long as you don't have a stomach ulcer or asthma. If you do have either of these take Paracetamol.

It definately sound like an abscess. Generally with swelling is an infection (an abscess).

Usually a dentist would try to save a tooth if at all possible, especially a front tooth so they may try root canal treatment first of all although this is not always successful.

You would probably not notice any discoloration for a while.

The dentist I work with usually prescribes Amoxycillin or Metronidazole as an antibiotic, some doctors will give you these if they know a bit more about dentistry, but if they don't they will give you something not so strong due to lack of knowledge (not there fault, not there main Field).

In the practice I work in no matter how busy we are there is no excuse for leaving a patient with swelling over the weekend, I would seriously make a complaint to the Principal Dentist at the practice.

Good luck and don't overdo the painkillers be careful!!
