Does a toothache ALWAYS mean something is wrong?

Does a toothache always mean a trip to the dentist is needed? Or can it be as mild as a little too much stress? Just hypothetically speaking. A short mild pain? A mild pain for a while?

Does a toothache ALWAYS mean something is wrong?
You really aren't being too descriptive with the symptoms so it's difficult to say. Depending upon the pain level, (some people have higher and some lower) would be a good indicator as to rushing to the dentist or waiting. If there is something you've eaten, such as foods with a high acidic level, (oranges, tomatoes, lemons or pineapples) these have been known to cause sensitivity to air and drinks. Then again if you've been eating peanuts or hard things and had a sharp pain that went away but made you flinch when it happened. Well, that could be an indication of a cracked tooth. Or if it just happens when you eat something sweet or when you drink, it could be a filling leaking or decay in a tooth. So you see, pain is usually an indication that "something" is wrong. We use your pain in determining what is wrong. Without knowing what the pain is, when it happens, along with how long and what stimuli causes it.....then there is no way to tell. So if you are having "pain" then I would suggest that you go see your dentist as soon as you can schedule an appointment. More than likely that little pain you are unsure of, will turn into a big one that sends you running to your dentist. Play it safe and see what it is, maybe a filling for now. Later it could be a root canal or worse. Good luck and I hope I've been of some help.
Reply:YES YES YES. Please take it from someone who has spent thousands of dollars on restorative dental care, if something hurts, go see the dentist. It can be the difference between a $100 filling and a $1500 root canal.
Reply:Well, it is a good indicator that something is wrong. However, it could just be you've eaten something that has irritated your teeth or that your teeth are sensitive. If it persists or gets worse, it's best to see a dentist.
Reply:Well if its a recent thing it should be checked, if its been around for a while and there has been dentist visits since its started and it hasn't gotten worse probably not.
Reply:Yes. HOW wrong, only the dentist can say. I've never known stress to bring on a toothache. Headache, definitely, but not toothache.

If you have sensitivity to cold, pressure, sugar, or hot, those can indicate different problems.

If I had a brief pain, that didn't come back, I'd probably forget about it. But if it's recurring, I'd see someone about it. If it's not too much of a problem, I'd just wait until my next tooth cleaning appointment, and mention it to the dentist.
Reply:Sometimes your teeth can bother you when it could be a sinus infection.
Reply:There are times when you may think you need a dentist, but you actually have sinus problems which can make your upper teeth sore. You can also experience pain when your "wisdom" teeth are breaking through the gums. It is like when a baby is teething and it hurts. You can also have pain that can feel like a tooth ache when you have a canker sore. If the tooth is throbbing, or swollen, I would get to a dentist asap.
Reply:we have pain for a reason, to let us know something is wrong! Granted it might now be anything major wrong, but check it out asap because you maybe able to catch something wrong before it turns into something major!
