Toothache help?

My mom has a very bad toothache and I'm trying to figure out what she should use. I went to Walgreens and they didn't have Orajel PM(20% Benzocaine). I read through all the products and came home with Anbesol Maximum Strength(20% Benzocaine) and a product called Red Cross Toothache which is 85% Eugenol(clove oil). Has any one ever used these? Which one is better till she can get to the dentist on Monday. Does she need to wait if one doesn't work before applying the other? Thanks to all who reply.

Toothache help?
She can use both of these temporary remedies and take ibuprofen (up to 800 mg/day). Please do NOT apply aspirin to the tooth as this will only add to her pain!! Since the benzocaine is a topical numbing agent, it will probably not help very much. The eugenol may be somewhat helpful. Since she has an infection the best thing is to take an antibiotic (from the DMD). She may need to get a root canal or an extraction. I hope she feels better soon!
Reply:Clove oil is good. It tastes horrible but it numbs the area. It is only temporary so she needs to get to a dentist as soon as she can.
Reply:Anbesol or Orajel would work equally well. I would like to suggest that if she is not taking an antibiotic she should before seeing the dentist. If there is a lot of infection they will be unable to do anything on Monday.
Reply:Orajel and Anbesol are the worst to use..i've been told that those cause it to get infected by a dentist..and i've used it myself and its just a temporary fix..trust me. Have her take some Advil, not the off-brand stuff, actual advil! Clove oil is actually used by dentist to help relieve the pain of a dry socket. So i would use that with Advil. Hope she feels better!
Reply:that happened to my dad once , what he did was put a piece of aspirin in the molar that was hurting and bite down to hold it in place that seem to do it for him .
Reply:Pain medicine for a tooth doesn't always work and anything with clove oil will help but if she is swollen then it indicates infection and no dentist will do work on an infected tooth. You can even mash up a clove and soak it in alcohol to dab on there periodically as that works almost instantly just don't swallow it. She should have gone in as a walk in on an emergency basis, all dentists make allowances for that. She could have at least gotten started on antibiotics today. Good luck
Reply:take some clove oil on a cotton pellet and place it on the tooth that is aching... however this would not be enough...ur mum would also have to take painkiller medicines... which ur dentist would advice depending upon what is suitable for ur mum. Get her to speak to her dentist on the phone or visit the emergency clinic for the prescription.
